Cataract Surgery Expectations

Does Cataract Surgery Hurt?

One of the most common concerns patients have is whether cataract surgery will be painful.

The reassuring answer is that most people feel little to no pain during the procedure.

How the eye is numbed

Before surgery begins, your surgeon uses numbing eye drops to make the surface of the eye comfortable.

You may also receive medication to help you relax.

Because the eye is numb, patients typically feel pressure or gentle movement, but not pain.

What patients usually experience

Many patients say the experience is easier than they expected.

You may notice:

  • Bright lights from the surgical microscope
  • Slight pressure during parts of the procedure
  • Some fluid sensation in the eye

These sensations are normal and temporary.

After surgery

Once the numbing drops wear off, some patients notice mild irritation, dryness, or a scratchy feeling.

These symptoms are usually mild and improve quickly as the eye heals.

Your surgeon will provide eye drops that help reduce inflammation and prevent infection.

A very common procedure

Cataract surgery has been performed safely for decades and is one of the most frequently performed procedures worldwide.

Most patients are surprised by how quick and comfortable the experience is.
