Cataract Symptoms

Blurry Vision That Glasses Don’t Fix

Many patients assume new glasses will solve blurry vision.

But if you find your prescription changing frequently — or glasses no longer help — cataracts may be the reason.

Why cataracts affect vision

Cataracts form when proteins in the eye’s lens begin to clump together. This cloudiness prevents light from focusing clearly on the retina, which leads to blurry or dim vision.

Because the clouding occurs inside the eye itself, glasses often cannot fully correct the problem.

Signs glasses may not be enough

You might notice:

  • Your prescription changes frequently
  • Vision still feels cloudy with new glasses
  • Bright lights create glare
  • Reading requires stronger lighting

Many people initially assume their glasses prescription is the problem — but the real cause may be cataracts.

A simple exam can provide answers

During a comprehensive eye exam, your doctor can determine whether cataracts are affecting your vision and how advanced they are.

Sometimes the best approach is simply monitoring the cataract. Other times, your doctor may begin discussing treatment options.

Either way, having clarity about what’s happening can be reassuring.
